Cyanogen Shuts Down CyanogenMod, Open Source Code Forked As LineageOS

Short Bytes: Cyanogen Inc. has announced that it’s discontinuing all its CyanogenMod services and Cyanogen-supported nightly builds. However, the Cyanogen team has announced that it’s forking the open source code under the name LineageOS.

After a series of hiccups, Cyanogen Inc., the company that wished to put a bullet in Google’s head, announced on Thursday that it’s shutting down all the services. According to its blog post, the company is discontinuing “all services and Cyanogen-supported nightly builds” no later than 12/31/16.”

The announcement also mentions that the open source project and source code will remain available to anyone who wishes to build Cyanogen personally.

As Cyanogen, Inc. holds all the trademarks associated with CyanogenMod, the project can’t continue in the current form. As a result, the CyanogenMod team is making efforts to salvage CM source code.

The CyanogenMod team is now using the code to develop an open source OS named Lineage. The new website of Lineage OS calls itself a continuation of Cyanogen. “A company pulling their support out of an open source project does not mean it has to die,” it says.

While the demise of CyanogenMod is saddening, we’ll be waiting for the next attempt of the team.
