Man in UAE arrested for uploading assault video on YouTube

The Police in Dubai have arrested an Indian national for filming and uploading a video on YouTube of a senior government official assaulting a van driver after a minor accident.

Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Dubai Police Major-General Khamis Mattar Al Mazeina said that the man was arrested as a result of a complaint lodged by the government official shown in video beating an Indian national over a minor car accident.

The YouTube video was recorded by a passer-by when suddenly a senior UAE government official came out of his car and started beating the Indian driver. The video shows the assault happening in clear view of other road users when one passer-by intervenes to stop the assault.

The Dubai police defended and expressed the arrest in following words:

  • It is not allowed for anyone to film others without the permission of the public prosecutor, or with the written permission of the person(s) who appear in the pictures.
  • In this case, it will be considered a violation of privacy, Dubai Police have issued an order to summon the publisher of the video, where he will be questioned about the reason for its publication and distribution.
  • It was better if the person who recorded the video had sent it to police rather then uploading it on the internet, this is a clear breach of privacy.

The original video has now been removed by police and people are warned to avoid uploading the video again.

UAE has strict cyber laws, recently the President of the country Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan had enforced an amendment in the Federal Legal Decree no. 5 which puts anyone in jail if found guilty indecent posting or breaching the privacy of personal(s).
