Credit and debit card users across the world have been warned to check statements carefully especially after the holiday season, as details of the malware emerged from researchers in Russia. So far it has been detected at retailers, restaurants and hotel chains.
According to the researchers, the malware has been most commonly found in outlets in the US, UK, and Canada but they remain uncertain on how the malware manages to infect POS systems, many of which use Windows Server. They do know that, once installed, it manages to access the machine’s list of active processes and send them to a command and control server, according to reports.
