Short Bytes: FBI Director James Comey has defended his decision to cover computer webcams with tape by calling it a sensible thing to do. He also advised the common public and asked them to take such measure for ensuring their safety. Comey also called it a “little camera thing” that’s a common practice at the FBI.
However, in a related development, FBI boss went ahead and suggested that everybody should put a piece of tape over the webcams. He made this statement when a reporter asked if he still has a piece of tape on his cameras at home.
Here’s what Comey had to say:
He said that it’s not crazy that the FBI Director cares about his personal security. He also said that people shouldn’t take it for granted that someone is out there to ensure their safety.
Stressing the need of putting a tape on webcams, he said, “so there are some sensible things you ought to be doing and that’s one of them.”
He called it a “little camera thing” that is a common practice at the FBI and other government offices. “You do that so that people who don’t have authority don’t look at you. I think that’s a good thing,” he said.
While putting a tape on your laptop’s webcam might help you in a particular manner, it won’t address the other cybersecurity fears faced by IoT and electronic devices. So, try to stay safe online and follow the best internet practices.
