Short Bytes: Canonical has released a new update for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS operating system, its official flavors, and derivates. This update covers fixes for 8 vulnerabilities found in the Linux kernel. For a secure computing experience, users are advised to update their Linux machines as soon as possible.
Marking another major development, Ubuntu parent Canonical has now released 8 major Linux kernel vulnerabilities. These vulnerabilities were spotted and reported by different developers from all across the world.
Labeled Ubuntu Security Notice USN-3070, Canonical’s advisory covers Ubuntu 16.04 LTS release and its flavors, including Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Ubuntu MATE, Ubuntu GNOME, Ubuntu Kylin, and Ubuntu Studio. The Ubuntu derivatives are also affected.
The advisory mentions a Linux kernel update that patches total eight vulnerabilities spotted in the upstream Linux 4.4 LTS kernel branch.
Here’s a brief introduction of each flaw spotted in the Linux kernel:
- Missing permissions check when setting ACLs
- Information leak in Reliable Datagram Sockets (RDS) implementation
- Problem in the airspy USB device driver
- Flaw in TCP implementation’s handling of challenge acks
- A race condition in the MIC VOP driver
- On PowerPC devices, kernel mishandled transactional memory state on exec()
- Head based buffer overflow in USB HID driver
- OverlayFS implementation didn’t verify dentry state before unlinking and renaming
Update Ubuntu 16.04 LTS Now!
Canonical has advised the users to update their systems now. On its advisory page, the company has also shared update instructions and correct package versions. You can grab the updated Ubuntu package directly from Ubuntu site or use Terminal.
Keeping the current vulnerabilities aside, users are advised to update their computer systems regularly. This ensures lesser risks and better performance.
