How To Build A Raspberry Pi Smartwatch — The Geekiest Watch Ever Made

Short Bytes:
Tiny single-board computer Raspberry Pi has changed the world of electronics and DIYing. Here, I’m sharing a couple of smartwatches that are built using Raspberry Pi. While they might score low for usability, they will surely set you apart from the regular crowd. ?

In our Getting Started With Raspberry Pi series, we’ve introduced you to the basics of Pi, told you how to get everything you need, and help you boot a basic operating system. But, Raspberry Pi is much more than that. You can use it as a TOR proxy router, build your own PiPhone, and even install Windows 10 IoT.

This little device comes with lots of flexibility, that allows it to be used in multiple applications. Well, did you ever think about wearing your Raspberry Pi? If your answer is NO, I won’t be surprised.

If you imagine a scenario where Raspberry Pi is used to build a smartwatch, it would look too bulky. Well, that’s the thing about making geeky things that set you apart from the regular crowd, right?

To challenge the costly smartwatches, RasPi.TV’s Alex Eames worked hard to create his own Raspberry watch. From its looks, it’s more of a forearm watch and less of a wristwatch.

Here’s a detailed and informative video of this proof of concept:

I would also like to mention another Raspberry Pi-based wearable named Manipulator Zero. Inspired by Doctor Who’s Vortex Manipulator LCD Watch, this watch is built for die-hard Whovians.

You’ll be surprised to know that it’s a full-fledged Linux machine that does a lot more than telling the time.

Its creator Jeremy Lee writes on his blog:

What I _can_ easily do is pre-create the equivalent of desktop shortcuts that run shell scripts or any arbitrary action you can do on a linux machine. The ultimate programmable remote control – that can also show you progress and logfiles.

Here’s a small demo of this Raspberry Pi-powered Doctor Who smartwatch:
