Short Bytes: The popularity of programming languages is measured using various factors. The TIOBE index is often used as the best way to learn about the popularity of a programming language and the latest trend indicates that Java is once again rising to claim the top spot.
Over the past 10 years, the popularity of Java has witnessed a downfall. However, in the early 2000s, TIOBE index was ruled by Java for a very long time with 25% popularity and more.
In the recent times, Java is once again revived, thanks to growing user base of Android.
“The ratings are based on the number of skilled engineers world-wide, courses and third party vendors. Popular search engines such as Google, Bing, Yahoo!, Wikipedia, Amazon, YouTube and Baidu are used to calculate the ratings,” according to TIOBE.
TIOBE suggests that this index could be used to check whether your programming skills are still up to date and which language should be adopted while building a new software system:
