Short Bytes: From the stage of Microsoft Developer Conference 2016, Microsoft once again showed off its love for developers. Redmond announced that GNU project’s Bash shell will be coming to Windows as a part of the upcoming Windows 10 Anniversary Update.
Microsoft surely knows how to speak to Linux developers. From the stage of Microsoft Developer Conference 2016, Microsoft’s Kevin Gallo announced, “The Bash shell is coming to Windows. Yes, the real Bash is coming to Windows.” This announcement received a huge round of applause from the audience.
The company announced that it’s bringing the GNU project’s Bash shell to Windows. Bash needs no introduction as it has long been a standard default terminal for OS X and other Lthatinux distros.
Note that this isn’t a cross-compiled or a virtual machine. Instead, it’s a proper and native Bash on Windows 10. This has been made possible with a new Microsoft-Canonical partnership that has allowed Redmond to include new native Ubuntu libraries in the OS.
This will enable the developers to write their own .sh Bash script on Windows.
Bash will be arriving along with this summer’s Windows 10 Anniversary Update and it’ll be made available to Windows 10 Insiders even before that.
With this step, Microsoft wants to establish itself as a real friend of developers. Microsoft has been doing this in the perfect way under the leadership of CEO Satya Nadella.
