VoCore2 Lite: A $4 Open Source Coin-sized Linux Computer

Short Bytes: The creators of VoCore coin-sized computer are back with VoCore2 which is an advanced version of the tiny Linux computer. It also comes in a VoCore2 Lite variant which is low on hardware and priced at $4. The VoCore is accompanied by a bunch of docks to enhance its capabilities.

I thought Raspberry Pi Zero was small and cheap at $5 but in March I saw VoCore. It is back in a new and upgraded avatar called VoCore2. It is also accompanied by VoCore2 Lite, the younger sibling of the VoCore2 which is a $4 computer ($3.99 to be exact) while VoCore2 is $11.99.

VoCore2 Lite Specifications

  • CPU: Mediatek MT7688AN @ 58MHz
  • RAM: 64MB DDR2
  • Storage: 8MB NOR Flash Memory
  • Connectivity: Wireless (150Mbps) via single antenna slot, Ethernet (100Mbps), SD Card, USB, etc.

The VoCore2 Lite is not as powerful as the higher priced VoCore2. It can be used for study and experimental purpose. At its border, the tiny Linux computer has castle holes (half-hole) which make it easy to mount on customized boards. It can play a major role in keeping IoT devices small.

The elder brother VoCore2 is more powerful than the Lite and finds its utility at various places. You can use it with the audio dock to enable AirPlay and DLNA music streaming on your speakers over WiFi. Connect it with a camera or use it as a server to share photos and videos, or use it as a portable router, etc. Club it with the PoE dock to beam the internet to those closed corners in your house.

VoCore2 uses a seriously low amount of power. A 9800 mAh power bank can keep it running for almost four days.

The Ultimate dock for VoCore 2 which gives easy access to its MicroSD port, USB port. The dock also has 4 AD converter channels and 1 DA converter channel to connect to various sensors.

The tiny single-board computer is an open source hardware and runs Linux operating system called OpenWRT – a distribution for embedded devices. Developers have its access from the hardware to its circuit diagram and sources code including bootloader.

The tiny computer VoCore2 is an Indigogo project which has raised $73,976 from 2137 backers (at the time of writing this article). The product has entered its mass production stage and is expected to available in January 2017.
