Why Canonical Hasn’t Released Ubuntu 18.04 LTS Yet? (Update: Now Released)

Update: Ubuntu 18.04 is now officially released.

Today is 26th April: the Ubuntu 18.04 release day. As it’s an LTS release, this day has a lot of importance for a Linux enthusiast who loves Ubuntu — the most popular open source operating system around.

The official and final release images of Ubuntu should be released anytime soon, but that hasn’t happened yet. The official Release Notes page still says: “Ubuntu 18.04 LTS HAS NOT BEEN RELEASED YET and is not recommended for use on production systems or on your primary computers yet.

Last moment bug in Ubuntu 18.04

About seven hours ago, the development team found a bug and it’s currently being fixed. Apparently, Bug #1767067 affects the live session options in Ubuntu, Ubuntu Kylin, Ubuntu Budgie, and Ubuntu MATE flavors. As per the latest update, the team is working hard to fix the bug and testing the release. (Update: The team has fixed the bug and the official release will be out anytime soon).

However, surprisingly, many reputed technology media websites like Ghacks, The Inquirer, How To Geek, and more have jumped the gun and published the “Ubuntu 18.04 Released” stories. Maybe they hit the publish button a little early. It happens. ?

The latest images available at the moment are daily release ISOs, and they do contain the bug mentioned above.

For the latest announcement, you can visit this Ubuntu Announce mailing list archive; the newest update mentioned there is Beta 2.
