Guccifer hacker who hacked AOL, Bush (sr) and Collin Powell arrested in Romania

Romanian authorities arrested Marcel Lazăr Lehel, a Romanian suspected of being the notorious hacker Guccifer, on Wednesday in Arad County, Romania.

Guccifer’s latest victim was the acting administrator of the US Nuclear Security Agency’s (NNSA), Neile Miller. He is believed to have hacked her email and Facebook accounts.

It was not clear if he got hold of any sensitive data, but he did manage to manipulate a 2010 photograph of Miller with President Obama on being appointed as the acting administrator of NNSA with his “GUCCIFER” logo.

According to Romania’s Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT), Lehel was charged for similar crimes and sentenced to three years supervised release in February 2012. He was arrested in 2011 for hacking the email and Facebook accounts of various public figures in Romania.

SoftPedia reports that the 40-year old hacker has been arrested because the authorities suspect that he “accessed, repeatedly and without authorization, by bypassing security measures, email accounts belonging to public figures from Romania, with the purpose of gaining possession of confidential information found in their electronic mailboxes” said the DIICOT representative.

Romanian authorities collaborated with US services to catch him, according to the DIICOT press statement.

Guccifer is infamous for hacking into high ranking politicians and celebrities. His other noted hacking includes US Secretary of State Collin Powell’s email and Facebook account during his stay at Bohemian Grove; hacking of emails and private pictures of former US president George HW Bush and his family in February 2013; actors Steve Martin and Mariel Hemingway, and a former CIA analyst Laura Manning Johnson.
