Short Bytes: The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) has created its own Android tablet, called Woolim, for distributing propaganda media and track its users. To limit the connectivity options, the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chips have been removed. The users can just connect to North Korea’s restricted internet and local TV.
In December 2015, we told you about the Red Star OS. We called it the worst Linux distro ever made as this North Korean OS has lots of spying features. The security researchers even called it “a wet dream of a surveillance state dictator.”
Going one step further, North Korea’s latest Android tablet, Woolim, has been heavily customized by the Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un. This Android device has been made to meet all the totalitarian standards of the government.
Wondering what’s so special about Woolim Android tablet? Well, let me tell you that its maker has removed its Bluetooth and Wi-Fi chips to cease any kind of free communication.
The only connectivity options are North Korea’s own crappy and restricted internet and local TV playback that’s full of government propaganda.
Also, one can only load the government sanctioned files and media on this Android tablet. If the APKs and files don’t have a cryptographic signature recognized by the tablet, it simply won’t run.
Last but not the least, opening the app automatically prompts the tablet to take an undeletable screenshot. This makes sure that the users don’t write or do something they aren’t supposed to do.
