Short Bytes: Phineas Phisher, the hacker who attacked the Hacking Team, has donated about $11,000 in bitcoin to Rojava to help fight ISIS. Phisher says that he stole the money from a bank and calls Rojava’s efforts as “one of the most inspiring revolutionary projects in the world.”
The hacker who claimed to hack the Hacking Team and Gamma Group is back again. This time, he has sent about $11,000 of allegedly stolen Bitcoin to help fight ISIS.
He has donated the money to Rojava, a Kurdish area of Syria that borders the region in the control of ISIS.
The hacker, who is known by different pseudonyms like “Phineas Phisher”, “@GammaGroupPR”, and “Hack Back!”, has described Rojava’s efforts as “one of the most inspiring revolutionary projects in the world.”
While the “Robin Hood” hacker declined to specify the actual source of money, he said that the money came from robbing a bank.
In a Reddit post, he said, “Bank robbing is more viable than ever, it’s just done differently these days.”
Previously, Fisher claimed the responsibility for attacking the Hacking Team, a firm that sold surveillance tools to governments. Breached in 2015, the Hacking Team leak gave away 400GB of sensitive data about its high profile clients.
Later, Fisher also published a DIY Guide to Hacking that mentioned the reasons behind the Hacking Team attack and how to carry out such attacks.
Coming back to Rojava, they are running a crowdfunding campaign to feed themselves and fight against the Islamic State. Thier condition is even worsened as they are cut-off from foreign trade.
For supporting Rojava, Reddit users have called Fisher a hero and called for more fund-claiming from banks for such causes.
