How To

Don’t Have MIUI 11’s Always-On Display; Here Is A Workaround

One of the biggest features of MIUI 11 is the Always-on Display i.e. the new clock themes, breathing light notifications, a signature theme where you can add personalized text, and a lot more.

As much as Xiaomi users would want to try out the new feature, MIUI 11 Always-on Display (AOD) only works on very few Xiaomi or Redmi smartphones, essentially on devices that have AMOLED display.

Note that this article is not about force enabling Xiaomi’s Ambient Display feature on your current device. We have tried that on multiple Xiaomi devices that offer an LCD screen, and it was no go.

MIUI 11 Always-on Display Alternatives

This left me no choice but to look for the next top alternatives for MIUI 11 Always-on Display.

There are a few Android apps on the Google Play Store that emulate the feature; unfortunately, they are not as good as the original MIUI 11’s AOD.

Google Ambient Mode

But we recently came across one workaround that certainly deserves an attempt — Google’s very own ambient display settings. The feature is hidden under several layers of Google settings. We wouldn’t be surprised if you never heard about it until now.

Google Ambient Mode offers a slideshow of your photos,  commute info, media controls, and other notifications on your Xiaomi’s device lock screen.

How to enable Google Ambient Mode on your Xiaomi Device?

Note: Google Ambient mode only works while the device is charging.
  1. Go to Android settings — Google — Account services — Search, Assistant & Voice — Google Assistant.

  2. Go to the Assistant tab, scroll down to the end and tap on Phone.

  3. In the Personalization section — toggle on the Ambient Mode option.

Toggle off the “Photo frame on ambient display” option if you wish to avoid displaying your personal pictures on the lock screen while the phone is charging.

The Ambient mode also allows users to wake Google Assistant without touching the device. Smartphone vendors usually don’t include the essential hardware in budget devices that could wake Google Assistant when the screen is off.

However, Google’s ambient mode can finally bring the feature on any Xiaomi/Redmi device, be it a budget or a flagship.
