World largest logistic company suffers massive cyber attack

Security teams at German logistics firm Hellmann Worldwide Logistics have confirmed that their IT infrastructure was hit by an unprecedented cyberattack. Cybersecurity experts are currently working on the system recovery process, but little has been officially revealed.

Hellmann offers air transport services as well as sea, road and rail transport, besides contracting logistics services through 489 offices in 173 countries.

The main concern of employees and clients is whether this incident involved a data leak scenario, but Hellman Worldwide Logistics still ignore the exact consequences of the attack: “Clear and binding policies on IT and information security are in place and apply at all times. We can currently not rule out that there have been data leakages or unauthorized use of data”, reads the company’s statement.

The company also recommends concerned clients to reach out to their contacts at Hellman on their own cell phones to avoid any malicious use of the compromised information. This was the last update that Hellman Worldwide published, written with the information collected until December 9, 2021.

Cyberattacks are a severe security threat in the transportation and logistics industry. A couple years ago, AP Moller-Maersk Group suffered losses of up to $300 million USD due to a NotPetya ransomware infection; this incident also affected Maersk Line, the world’s largest container shipping operator.
