Why Linus Torvalds Doesn’t Like Using Debian Or Ubuntu Linux?

Short Bytes:
In many interviews, Linux creator Linus Torvalds has revealed that he prefers Fedora on his machines. But, why does he refuse to use popular Linux distro Debian? Well, the answer lies in his bad installation experiences with Debian Linux in the past.

From the past 25 years, Linus Torvalds is working tirelessly to make Linux a more efficient and user-friendly computing platform. His creation is now available to the open source lovers in the form of many Linux distros that serve a wide variety of users.

Linux and open source software support the idea of choice and it acts as their driving force. However, with time, the internet is filled with tons of Linux distros based on Debian and Ubuntu-like features.

Linux kernel is the key to these open source operating systems, including Google’s Android. But, which operating system does the Linux creator himself use?

While you might be aware that Linus likes to use Fedora on all the devices he owns, you might not know his thoughts regarding the world’s most popular open source desktop operating system Ubuntu and another user-favorite Debian.

Linus Torvalds on Debian:

You’ll find it amusing to know that Linus finds Debian difficult to install. Yes, this happened during an interview in 2007 and here’s what he had to say about the same a few years later:

I’m sorry, you may want to close your ears now, I want a distribution to be easy to install, so that I can just get on with my life, which is mostly kernel.

Linus calls Debian a ”pointless exercise” as the point of a distribution is to make things simple and easy to install.

Linus Torvalds on Ubuntu Linux:

In another interview, Linus talked about Ubuntu Linux. While he calls Debian too technical, he appreciates Ubuntu for making Linux familiar to the users coming from a Windows and OS X background. Still, he prefers Fedora over Ubuntu.

He says:

I’ve tried Ubuntu a couple of times over the years, mainly because the thing Ubuntu did so well was make Debian usable.

Over the past years, Debian has worked to make its installation easier. Today, the Debian installer has made things simpler by offering a choice of graphical, text, or speech synthesis options.
