Linus Torvalds: “I’ll Spend Next 25 Years To Help Linux Beat Windows In Desktop War”

Short Bytes:
While Linux and other open source technologies continue to rule the server and mobile markets, the desktop arena is still dominated by Windows operating systems. Linux creator Linus Torvalds knows this fact very well and expresses his commitment to work hard to make Linux a bigger force in the desktop war.

Without any doubt, Linux continues to rule the web and power millions of machines all around the globe. The operating system breathes life in our mobile devices, servers, robots, super computers, home automation systems and whatnot.

However, when it comes to the desktop, Windows continues to rule the PCs. When Microsoft committed a blunder named Windows Vista, Linux had the perfect moment to seize the opportunity, but it failed to build its empire.

Linux creator Linus Torvalds knows this fact very well. Recently in an interview with CIO, he admitted the same by saying that “desktop hasn’t really taken over the world like Linux has in many other areas”.

However, he remains positive and expresses his commitment.

This August, Linux, one of the biggest open source projects of the world, will turn 25. Linus says that he’s ready to work for another 25 years to wear them (read Windows PCs) down.

Here’s what he said:

Despite the fact that I’m known for sometimes not being very polite to some of the desktop UI people, because I want to get my work done. Pretty is not my primary thing. I actually am very happy with the Linux desktop, and I started the project for my own needs, and my needs are very much fulfilled. That’s why, to me, it’s not a failure.

He added:

I would obviously love for Linux to take over that world too, but it turns out it’s a really hard area to enter. I’m still working on it. It’s been 25 years. I can do this for another 25. I’ll wear them down.

Well, over the years Linux has grown to own the server and mobile markets. Who knows what happens in the desktop scenario in the next 10 years!

Good luck Tux ?
