The latest release of Linux Mint 18.3 “Sylvia” kicked off the development of the new Linux Mint 19.x series. In a recent blog post, the development team shared some brief updates on the same. It has been confirmed that the first release in this series will be called Linux Mint 19 “Tara.” “Tara is a popular name here in Ireland, and the name of someone we really like,” the announcement read.

Note: This is a continuously updated article, just like Ubuntu 18.04 Features post. From time-to-time, I’ll be adding new features as they’re revealed by the Mint development team.

Linux Mint 19 Release Date

At the moment, there’s no exact release date. However, the developers have stated that Linux Mint 19 could be released around May/June 2018. This makes perfect sense as Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu and the next LTS release, i.e., Bionic Beaver, will be released on April 26, 2018.

It’s also worth mentioning that unlike Ubuntu, Mint doesn’t follow a fixed schedule; the new releases are pushed whenever they are considered ready and polished enough.

Linux Mint 19 Features and Roadmap

Based on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS

Moving ahead to the expected features of Linux Mint 19. The major highlight and change of the release would be the change of Ubuntu base. All the Mint 19.x releases, starting from Mint 19, will be based on Ubuntu 18.04.

GTK 3.22

GTK 3.22 is a major stable release of GTK3 and Mint 19 will be taking advantage of the same. This, and other new technologies will bring obvious improvements to the theme, user experience, and overall performance.

Mint 18 support date

Linux Mint 18 will remain supported until 2023. Till then, you can use it as your daily driver and rest assured in terms of all important fixes and security updates.

Mint 18 Roadmap

While exact details regarding other features aren’t available, Mint team has some information mentioned on its GitHub page in the form of a roadmap. The tentative improvements and features will affect theme icons, HIDPI, Redshift, artwork, update, etc.
