Towards the end of 2018, Microsoft announced that it is ditching EdgeHTML in favor of a Chromium-based engine for the development of its new browser.
While the Redmond giant hasn’t revealed a specific timing as to when we can expect the application to go live, it did confirm that a preview version of the upcoming Microsoft Edge would arrive in early 2019.
Contrary to the belief that this early release would be tied to the Windows Insider program only, a Microsoft engineer said (Via TechDows) on Reddit that Microsoft will release a standalone installer. It would allow anyone to try out the new Chromium-based Microsoft Edge browser and provide feedback.
“We do plan to make this available as a separate download, so you can install whether or not you’re configured for Windows Insider builds,” read the comment.
The previous versions of Microsoft’s applications were usually made available to users who signed up to become ‘Windows Insiders.’ So this is quite a surprise coming from the software giant.
Given that some users don’t want to mess up their systems by using unstable versions of software in Windows 10 insider builds, offering Edge preview build to the public will attract more users who’d be willing to test and report issues to Microsoft.
