Apple Could Soon Buy Self-Driving Car Startup Drive.ai

Taking further steps in its autonomous car venture, Cupertino tech major Apple is likely to take over the self-driving company Drive.ai.

According to a report by The Information, Apple’s collaboration with Drive.ai, which is referred to as ‘acqui-hire’ is expected to see a shift in dozens of Drive.ai’s employees to Apple.

For those who don’t know, Drive.ai has been looking for a buyer since February and is currently conducting pilot programs for its prototype shuttles in Texas.

While both Apple and Drive.ai did not comment on the news, it is suggested that Drive.ai has been struggling to keep its business afloat. Hence, the startup has been looking for buyers in order to keep the ship sailing.

As for Apple, the Cupertino tech company has been putting its head in and out of the self-driving car arena; the company has changed plans for its Project Titan several times and has even hired/fired various employees for the same venture.

Buying Drive.ai means Apple seriously wants to focus on the segment, with the hiring of various engineers who are acquainted with the neural network system in electric vehicles.

However, there is no word on exactly how many Drive.ai employees will be shifted to Apple and other details regarding the deal.

So stay tuned to Fossbytes for further updates on the same.
