Apple Reportedly Plans Netflix-Like ‘Gaming Subscription Service’

A few weeks back, Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed that Apple will launch a handful of “new services” this year but he didn’t mention what kind of services it would be.

Now, a report from Cheddar states that Apple is in talks with game developers for creating a gaming subscription service where users can pay a subscription fee to access a bundled list of games for a fixed period.

However, there is no word on the pricing but Apple reportedly initiated the discussion with developers in the second half of 2018. So we can assume that the service is still in the early stages of development.

The Cupertino giant is also exploring options like partnering with developers as a publisher which would allow it to take care of distribution, marketing, and other related costs for select games.

If Apple actually becomes a publisher for the games it can sell through a subscription, developers will get a huge incentive to create exclusive games for Apple’s service as it reduces the fees which they usually pay to an outside firm.

Given that Apple’s hardware sales have taken a hit in the recent time, Apple faces pressure to venture in the services market.

The iPhone-maker is also working on a video streaming service to rival Netflix along with other plans like teaming up with carriers to boost the subscriber base for Apple Music and releasing a news subscription service this year.
