India Gets Its First Google-Powered Traffic Signals In Bengaluru

Bengaluru is one of the cities where traffic jams are a serious issue. To combat the issue, six modern traffic signals have been installed featuring Dynamic Signalling technology and will be powered by Google Maps.

The traffic signals will use the technology to monitor the volume and speed of traffic to dynamically operate traffic signals. This will be the first time this technology has been introduced in India.

Six locations where these signals have been fine-tuned include West Phase at SBI (Toll) Junction, Siemens Junction, Paramount Junction, Wipro Junction, RS Junction, and Oterra Junction.

In the last two locations, traffic signals operate in stand-alone mode, whereas, in other locations, a synchronized mode has been used.

The Google Maps powered dynamic traffic signals have been installed with the sole motive of reducing the waiting time at a signal during non-peak hours.

The contemporarily deployed signals use a pre-programmed system that turns on the green light, yellow light and red light at a particular time intervals but waiting at a signal during non-peak hours is a wastage of time.

According to Rama NS, CEO of Electronics City Industrial Township Authority (ELCITA) says, “Our objective is to reduce this time and to accurately measure the amount of time required to cross without causing inconvenience to the commuters, using the Google mapping technology.

How Will Google-Powered Traffic Signals Work?

The technology will leverage traffic congestion data obtained from Google Maps to analyze the traffic density. On the basis of the analysis, the traffic signaling system will calculate the time required for traffic to move towards a particular direction.

The green signal will be displayed for the calculated time and a counter will appear on the traffic signal indicating the time for which the signal will be green.

This system is already in place in countries like the USA and Germany. One of the several benefits of this technology is that it is automated. Hence, less manpower will be required to operate signals.
