Jio’s Plan To Launch A ‘Super App’ Could Make It The ‘Indian WeChat’

Reliance Jio, since its launch three years back, has invaded the telecom sector in India to become the arguable telco in the country. Aiming to expand its reach to other areas too, the company could introduce a super app.

The super app by Jio is likely to provide a plethora of services such as e-commerce, online bookings, and payments, all happening within a single app, much like what Paytm is offering at present.

To remind you, the inspiration comes from WeChat which is a popular app in China. While Paytm, Freecharge, and more which are still trying to make a mark like WeChat in India, Jio seems to have an opportunity to mimic China’s favorite app finally.

It is further suggested that the umbrella app by Reliance Jio will likely be a part of Jio’s long-rumored e-commerce plans (to take on the major online portals in India) which aims to form an online to offline network.

As a reminder, Jio will collaborate with Reliance Retail for its e-commerce venture and is expected to launch its platform in Gujarat first.

Can Jio’s Super App Be A Success?

While we lack information about Jio’s one-stop app, the super app can prove to be a success in India given that Reliance Jio has around 300 million users in India. An active user base can help in making the app popular, and my instinct says the app will come with a lot of added features to attract us all.

For those who don’t know, Jio’s GigaFiber is also slated to go public and is expected to include TV, landline and internet services, all allegedly priced at Rs 600 per month.

Following the ‘low price, high service’ mantra, Jio seems to sway many sectors in India, and after the telecom gamble, it could succeed in others too.
