Linus Torvalds has released Linux kernel 4.20 (it looks like we’re not getting Linux 5.0 anytime soon). This reminds me of last year’s Linux 4.9, which turned out to be the biggest ever kernel in terms of the number of commits.
Talking about the latest Linux 4.20, it’s a big kernel as well. As per Phoronix, it’s the biggest kernel update in more than a year — if we consider the lines of code.
In the official announcement, Linus Torvalds said that he didn’t consider taking another week for the release as everybody was already taking a break due to holidays.
There are some issues that you can find in the announcement, but none of them are too big. Most recently, in the last week of development, the biggest chunk of change came in the form of usual networking fixes.
Linus also took this opportunity to wish the kernel enthusiasts and developers a merry Christmas. “Have a Merry Christmas or other holiday of your choice,” he said.’
It goes without saying that the arrival of 4.20 has opened the merge window for 4.21 and it’s also turning out to be a big release.
