Microsoft Releases New Windows Terminal On Windows Store; Download Now

Earlier this year at the Build 2019 event, Microsoft announced a new Windows Terminal for Windows 10. So far, developers have been using the code available on GitHub but now the installer has been released on Windows Store today.

You can access the traditional cmd line, PowerShell, and the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL), all at one place, through the new Windows Terminal.

Microsoft has added multiple tab support, along with themes and customization for developers. However, you’ll have to tweak a JSON file, to get all of the customization options right now on the Terminal app. This is because it’s an early preview so it doesn’t have all the functionalities.

Microsoft has some instructions on how to configure your settings and key binds in the JSON file, and you can even change the background image.

Windows Terminal now also supports GPU-based text rendering and emojis too. At the Build event, Microsoft flaunted the emoji support. The text rendering here is DirectX-based so it can display regular text characters, glyphs, and symbols are available on your PC.

Please note that you will need Windows 10 version 18362 to use the new Windows Terminal. So make sure that you have this build number associated with the May 2019 Update or you have a Windows Insider build installed.
