Qualcomm 215 Released With Premium Features: 64-Bit CPU, Dual Camera Support, WiFi-AC

Chipset maker Qualcomm has introduced a new SoC in its Snapdragon 2-series — the Qualcomm 215 — bringing various new features for smartphones coming under the affordable segment. Many of these features were earlier a selling point for more premium smartphones. Now they’re making their way to budget phones.

For those who don’t know, Qualcomm has changed its branding and will only include Snapdragon in its premium processor series. The Qualcomm 2-series doesn’t come with Snapdragon.

Qualcomm 215 Highlights

The budget mobile platform’s main highlight is support for Dual ISP, meaning that budget smartphones with Qualcomm 215 chips can support dual cameras, rated at up to 8MP.

For a single camera, the processor has support for up to 13MP camera resolution. Additionally, there is support for Full HD+ video recording.

It supports HD+ displays with an aspect ratio of 19:9, which will allow for an edge-to-edge viewing experience on affordable smartphones.

Qualcomm 215 Tech Specs

The new 215 processor has four ARM Cortex-A53 cores and is the first chipset in the 2-series with a 64-bit CPU for up to 50% increased CPU performance.

The processor comes with Adreno 308 GPU for around 28% better gaming and supports Qualcomm Hexagon DSP for better audio and sensor processing.

In addition to this, the 215 processor (successor to the 205 series) comes with support for Qualcomm’s Quick Charge fast charging tech for up to 75% faster charging.

On the connectivity front, the 215 processor supports Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X5 modem, EVS voice calls for Ultra HD calling, Dual-SIM, Dual-VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, and NFC that seem to be an added ability for quicker payments.

The new processor for budget smartphones is specifically meant for countries such as India where affordable smartphones are in demand.

Qualcomm’s 215 mobile platform will come in on budget smartphones in the second half of 2019.
