Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 Will Be Manufactured By Samsung

According to a report by the South Korean publication TheElec, Qualcomm has chosen Samsung to manufacture its next flagship mobile SoC Snapdragon 865. Those who are unaware, Samsung had previously fabricated Snapdragon 820 and Snapdragon 835 for Qualcomm whereas TSMC, the Taiwan-based chip manufacturer, manufactured SD 845 and 855.

The report claims that Samsung will deploy the 7nm extreme ultra-violet (EUV) process for manufacturing Snapdragon 865. TSMC also used the same process for fabricating the current chipset SD 855.

Interestingly, Apple’s A13 chipset will also use the EUV process and Snapdragon 865 will be one of the few processors based on EUV. The process allows chip makers to install extremely small sized circuits on a silicon wafer.

Qualcomm believes that Samsung’s 7nm EUV process is more efficient than TSMC’s and therefore it has chosen Samsung for its manufacturing.

There are also rumors that SD 865 will be available in two versions – a standard Snapdragon 865 and a Snapdragon 865 with X55 5G modem.

Nothing has been made official by either of the companies, but reports circulating online suggest that the agreement is in its final stage.

Samsung will reportedly start manufacturing the Snapdragon 865 by the end of 2019.

Qualcomm isn’t the only company that has chosen Samsung’s 7nm EUV process. Intel has also chosen Samsung’s 7nm EUV foundries for its next-generation processors. Nvidia is another company that has selected Samsung for its GPU chips.

On the other hand, TSMC will manufacture Apple’s upcoming A13 chipsets and Kirin SoC.
