We are still a couple of weeks away from Raspberry Pi 4, but the company has launched a new addition to its Compute Module series with Raspberry Pi Compute Module 3+.
It brings considerable improvements in terms of RAM capacity, Flash capacity and thermal performance over its predecessor Pi CM3.
However, the highlighting feature of this mini computer is the ease of use it will offer owing to its small form factor. Pi CM 3+ packs the power that comes in Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ by featuring Broadcom BCM2837B0, Cortex-A53 (ARMv8) 64-bit SoC @ 1.2GHz and different RAM options. But, CM3++ will not be able to run at 1.4 GHz and is limited to 1.2 GHz as compared to mainstream Pi model B3+.
The official blog post reads, “If someone wanted to create a Raspberry Pi-based product but found the Model A or B Raspberry Pi boards did not fit their needs, they could use a Compute Module, create a simple low-tech carrier PCB, and make their own thing.”
With improved PCB thermal design and the upgraded BCM2837B0 processor, the new member of Pi family would be able to draw heat away from the processor faster than its previous version.
Also, the Compute Module supports two cameras and two displays and an extra GPIO in comparison to a regular Raspberry Pi.
Raspberry Pi Compute Module 3+ will be available in three different eMMC flash sizes including 8GB, 16GB, and 32 GB. Additionally, a flash-less lite version is also available.
Compute Module 3+ starts at $25 and will be available until at least 2026.
