Japanese company Sony is arguably the biggest producer of camera sensors, both for DSLRs and smartphones. Further uping its camera game in the tech world, the company is now going to manufacture new 3D camera sensors.
According to a report by Bloomberg, Sony is expected to introduce new 3D sensors, heeding to the demand from various other tech companies relying on Sony’s camera sensors.
The new 3D sensors will be for both the rear as well as front cameras, preferably for smartphones in 2019. The company is expected to start the mass production for the same in late summer 2019.
However, the production and sales targets still remain unknown.
The new 3D sensors (for depth sensing) are likely to be an upgrade to the existing ones, found in iPhone X series and the OnePlus 6T.
The sensors could work on the lines of the Time Of Flight concept which will send laser beams and note the time taken to bounce back, which will eventually allow for detailed 3D mapping and could work from up to a distance of 5 meters.
The 3D sensors could call for better facial recognition, gaming, navigation, or could be used for 3D gestures. Furthermore, Sony is expected to provide the new 3D sensing tech to other companies as well.
