This DIY “Hackintosh” Is Going To Challenge Apple’s Beastly Mac Pro

When Apple announced the new ‘Cheese Grater’ Mac Pro with up to 28 CPU cores and 1.5TB of RAM, creative professionals were drooling over it. However, it comes with a hefty price tag of $5,999 which is beyond the reach of many people.

Now, the popular YouTuber Linus Tech Tips is building a “Hackintosh” with the same specs as Apple’s Mac Pro. The YouTuber is aiming to build a Hackintosh device with 28-cores on a home-built Mac before Apple releases its Mac Pro.

To build a Mac Pro rival Hackintosh device, the host says he’ll need a motherboard which is comparable to the overly impressive expansion capabilities of Mac Pro and is compatible with macOS. To remind you, Apple’s cheese grater comes with 12 user-accessible DIMM slots.

For GPU, Linus says that he’ll use Radeon 7 which is the fastest available card, compatible with the latest version of macOS. He’ll need a couple of such cards to compete with the performance of Mac Pro.

The expected Hackintosh is still in the proof-of-concept stage and the DIY procedure will take time. The YouTuber clearly states that this is not a tutorial, but DIY enthusiasts can borrow a tip or two from the interesting video series.

It remains to be seen whether these guys can build a Hackintosh with specs similar to Mac Pro. Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see whether they’ll succeed or not and what would be the price of the resultant beastly device.
