University of Virginia Hacked, Database Leaked by @AnonAntidote

The official website server of University of Virginia-Information Technology Services (ITS) got hacked and the database was leaked online few hours ago by @AnonAntidote of Anonymous hacktivist group.

The hack was announced by @AnonAntidote on their official Twitter account.

The University of Virginia (often abbreviated as UVA or Virginia) is a public research university in Charlottesville, Virginia, United States. It was conceived and designed by U.S. President Thomas Jefferson and established in 1819.

@AnonAntidote also left a simple message along with the targeted link, according to the hacker:

Hacked by @AnonAntidote, Target: http://its.virginia.edu/ | Leaked data: http://pastebay.net/1151678

Info: University of Virginia (Information Technology Services)

The hacker managed to bypass all the securities set against the site and have not only accessed the server but also gained access to  the sensitive data stored, which has now been leaked to PasteBay http://pastebay.net/1151678.

The massive leaked data is available on PasteBay, which has the usernames, emails addresses University staff’s names, emails, their phone numbers, emails of the account, Laboratory & IT departments, tables and columns from the university’s server.

This is not the first time when @AnonAntidote has done a high-profile hack, on October 21, 2012, the same hacker hacked into the server of University of Kentucky-College of Pharmacy and leaked massive database which had plain-text passwords and emails of the university staff.

Maybe it is time for US consider getting better security as the cyber-attacks on The USA do not seem to be easing off and will no doubt continue at an alarming rate.

At the time of writing this article, the website of the University of Virginia was working normally.
