It seems like Microsoft will be solving one of the biggest problems Windows user face — “insufficient storage space” in the next Windows 10 19H1 update.
With the 1903 feature update, coming in April this year, Microsoft has announced the introduction of a feature called “Reserve Storage” for managing storage on Windows.
Under this, Microsoft will reserve 7GB of extra storage for Windows Update, temporary files, and system cache.
Until now, Microsoft warned users about the low storage capacity in devices that were about to install a new update.
While it also guided users to delete unnecessary files, and turn on the Windows Storage Sense, the solution was getting people nowhere. We saw this in Windows 10 October update where many people failed to update to the latest version.
With Windows 19H1, all unnecessary files will move towards the reserved storage to pave the way for the new Windows feature update. This will also automate the task of cleaning desktop before getting a new update.
However, this doesn’t mean the reserved storage will stay unused for the entire time. Microsoft says that all the temporary files will be moved to that “7 GB”, giving more space to the user.
This will allow the system and apps to run more smoothly. Meanwhile, Windows storage sense will continue to do its work of deleting chunks of extra files.
As of now, Microsoft calls it an “optional feature” which can be viewed by going to Settings > Apps > Apps & features > Manage optional features. In the blog post, Microsoft also mentions that you can lessen the space but doesn’t say by how much.
