ASUS 6Z First Impressions: Flip It Out For Awesomeness

Evidently, full-screen smartphones have become mandated and their attainment via a pop-up/flip selfie camera is something tech companies are adapting to at a fast pace. The most recent one to launch with a scenario where the display and camera go hand-in-hand is the ASUS 6Z, which has just entered the Indian market.

One thing worth noting is that the ASUS 6Z acts as a direct competition to the recently-launched OnePlus 7 Pro and shares various features with the latter.

As a mandatory ritual, I spent some time with the very recent 6Z, and these are my very first impressions about the smartphone:

Design

The ASUS 6Z scores pretty well in the design department as the adjective for it is premium. It looks good and feels just right in the hands, and this is where it has an edge over the OnePlus 7 Pro, which tends to be on the heavier side.

The ASUS 6Z has an edge-to-edge display with LED notification panel at the top and almost no bezels. The back side of the device has a 3D curved glass, with the flip camera module placed at the top portion, followed by a fingerprint scanner and the company’s logo arranged vertically.

The right side of the smartphone has the volume rocker, the power on/off button, and the Smart Key meant to perform a couple of functions. The left side has a SIM card/memory card tray. The bottom part has speaker grille and USB Type-C port, while the top part has nothing on it.

While the design appears to be good-looking, the near bezel-less screen is not meant for single-handed usage, which is a drawback.

Display

The ASUS 6Z spans 6.4-inch and the display is called a NanoEdge all-screen display. Protected by a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 6, the 6Z’s display is bright enough for easy usage. The NanoEdge display is one of the highlights of the smartphone and it was a pleasure using the device. Additionally, the viewing angles were fine and I used the device in sunlight and did not face much sunlight visibility issues.

However, I would need to use it more in order to tell how exactly the display is.

Cameras

The camera is the second attraction of the smartphone, and it is a flip camera. The motorized dual flip cameras (48MP and 13MP) act as both the primary and the front cameras, which is an intriguing concept.

The smartphone supports various camera features such as HDR+, dual LED flash, motion tracking video, Free angle mode, Super night mode, and more.

While I did not get enough time to use the cameras, the cameras impressed me. The output produced wasn’t processed and had natural colors, which I loved. Another thing worth viewing is that as it is a flip camera, the front camera also stands at 48MP and 13MP, which makes my hopes high with the front camera performance/

I will be coming up with a full review of the ASUS 6Z for a better conclusion. Hence, stay tuned to this space.
