Mandatory EV Charging Points
The government of England is set to pass a new law that will make it mandatory to install an EV charging point in every new and upcoming house. This charging point will charge plug-in hybrids as well as electric cars. The government is planning to spend £40 million to research this initiative for proper implementation. There are still questions around how this new upcoming law, including how a house with no off-street parking or multistorey apartments will comply with this law. Hopefully, the authorities will find a way after spending the above-mentioned billions of pounds.
The initiative is part of the Government’s Road to Zero Initiative, a £1.4 initiative to cut emissions down by 2040. The ultimate aim of this objective is to make the UK a carbon-neutral country by 2050. Based on this new initiative, eco-friendly cars like fully electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids, and hydrogen-powered cars will remain on sale while all ICE-powered cars will be banned.
The UK government is also to explore contactless payments along with ‘smart charging.’ The Department for Transport specifically is researching into these topics to make the adoption of EVs easier and to make the efficient use of charging points.
Transport Secretary Chris Grayling wants to make charging your EV as simple as charging your mobile phone. According to him, using a home charging “you can simply plug your car in to charge overnight as you would a mobile phone.”
