Ubuntu 17.10 Alpha 1 Released: Download Lubuntu, Kubuntu, And Ubuntu Kylin Flavors

Canonical Inc. has announced the Alpha 1 release of the non-LTS Ubuntu 17.10 Artful Aardvark, an important point release of the Ubuntu Linux which is going to ditch a major component when it releases in October this year.

Other than adopting GNOME as the default desktop, it will also make the way for Wayland as Canonical has already scrapped plans to use Mir for their desktop operating system.

Ubuntu 17.10 Alpha 1 is available in Kubuntu, Lubuntu, and Ubuntu Kylin flavors. As obvious, the first build is for testers and Ubuntu flavor developers. The set of ISOs also includes an experimental build called Lubuntu Next which is based on the LXQT desktop environment.

Ubuntu isn’t a participating distribution in the Alpha 1. You can give it a try if you can live with random crashes and freezes. Installing it on a virtual machine would be better.

“Alpha 1 includes a number of software updates that are ready for wider testing. This is quite an early set of images, so you should expect some bugs,” according to release notes.

As per release schedule, the next Alpha release for opt-in Ubuntu 17.10 flavors will be on July 27, followed by the first beta on August 31.

You can find the download links for Ubuntu Flavor ISOs in the release announcement.
