Massive US Healthcare Company Hacked, 1.1 million customers affected

Massive Healthcare Company is another victim of malicious Hacking — Currently the third Blue Cross and Blue Shield insurer targeted.

Hackers have targeted yet another healthcare company, CareFirst Blue Cross and Blue Shield, a healthcare insurer that provides healthcare facility for residents in Maryland, Washington and parts of Virginia, said on Wednesday that it’s been struck by a massive cyber-attacking that resulted in 1.1 million customer records being compromised.

Modern Healthcare broke the news that hackers took over a company database last year and possibly accessed member usernames, names, birth dates, e-mail addresses and identification numbers, whereas the social security numbers, financial records, passwords and credit card numbers were reportedly not retrieved, CareFirst stated.

The security firm Mandiant exposed the attack in June last year and was employed to examine the company after hackers alleged attacks on other healthcare insurers in recent days, including Premera Blue Cross and Anthem. The article disclosed that CareFirst is the third Blue Cross and Blue Shield insurer to report a cyber-attack this year, following record-breaking hacks at Premera and Anthem, which affected 11 million people and 80 million people, respectively.

CareFirst CEO Chet Burrell issued a statement that they profoundly regret the damage the hacks might have caused to their customers and further said that they are doing their best to recognize the effected customers and enlighten them about the extent of damage and make them understand the nature of it so they can be better informed about which data was compromised and which wasn’t.
