Librem 5 Linux Smartphone Crosses Its $1.5 Million Funding Goal

Linux smartphone Librem 5 has met its $1.5 million crowdfunding goal with 2 weeks left in the campaign. With this campaign, Purism aims to create the world’s first encrypted, open smartphone ecosystem that brings total control to the users. Reaching this goal ahead of schedule will help the people behind the project accelerate the production of the final product.

As per the official announcement, the company plans to go into the hardware production phase as soon as possible. This will also be accompanied by the initiation of the building of publicly available base software platform.

Over the past few months, Librem 5 has managed to create headlines in the open source world by scoring major partnerships with KDE and GNOME. Purism will also announce more partnerships in near future, the company CEO Todd Weaver told us previously in an interview.

Librem 5 will run security-focused PureOS, which will offer phone, email, messaging, voice, camera, browsing, and expand the functionalities after shipment. It’ll also be updated with more applications over the time.
