As a recent development to this story, a developer has been able to run the complete Ubuntu Linux with the Unity desktop. It just looks likes a real Ubuntu installation based on Unity running on Windows 10.
Redditor w2qw has found a way to do this and run full-fledged applications like virt-manager or Mozilla Firefox. This developer managed to run Unity inside Windows Linux Subsystem (WLS) by doing different changes in the CompizConfig Settings Manager (CCSM) GUI tool for Compiz.
The developer also made use of a combination of XLaunch and VcXsrv for configuring and setting up a Windows X server. The operating system version ran here is the Ubuntu 14.04.4 LTS.
It’s just not applicable for Unity. Instead, the programmer was able to run xfce4. However, this trick resulted in more bugs.
