When Canonical decided to halt the development of Ubuntu Touch mobile operating system, it came as a surprise to many. However, due to the lack of interest of smartphone manufacturers and community, this tough decision was taken. Later, UBPorts decided to take up the Ubuntu Touch development work.
Down the line when Librem 5 open source smartphone’s development work started gaining momentum, and it partnered with GNOME and KDE projects, the community members also expected a possible collaboration with UBPorts as well. Fortunately, that partnership has seen the daylight.
As per an official blog post, Ubuntu Touch mobile operating system will be supported and integrated with Librem 5 hardware. The users of the smartphone will also be also to stay assured regarding future compatibility.
“When the Librem 5 is delivered to pre-order customers, it will become one of just a few smartphones that support the free and open source operating system.”
When Librem 5 will be publicly available to the customers in January 2019, it’ll ship with PureOS and GNOME by default. In case the users would wish to move to Ubuntu Touch, they’d be able to do so easily. As a result, the three choices will be:
- Librem 5 with PureOS
- Librem 5 with PureOS (KDE Plasma Mobile)
- Librem 5 with Ubuntu Touch
This development is surely interesting and equally exciting for open source enthusiasts who are looking for an Android and iOS alternative.
