As a part of ‘Made In India’ initiative, a group of 50 engineers has developed India’s first LTE chipset, funded by SaaS company Zoho Corp.
Announced by Zoho Corp founder – Sridhar Vembu, the LTE chip has been introduced after eight years of hard work and is “one-of-a-kind in India.”
Sridhar Vembu, at an event discussing the importance of a home-grown chipset, said, “It is important for the economy, sovereignty, and security of the country that we build this here.”
LTE or Long-Term Evolution is a network speed which is around ten times faster than 3G networks.
While details about the India-made chipset are still not known (the launch is expected soon), the chipset will compete against famous chipset makers such as Qualcomm and Intel, among many others.
For those who are unaware, currently, India doesn’t have an indigenous source of chipset production but just the two government ones, namely, Semiconductor India Ltd (SCL) and Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL).
The introduction of the same could help India become self-sufficient in chip manufacturing, much like the initiatives taken for battery and PCB production in India.
